A Music Review: What I'm listening to

I am by no means a music guru, but I love listening to music. And I love when people tell me about new bands to listen to even more. It's so hard to find new bands these days, with all the new artists coming out all the time. A lot of websites and magazines give really inaccurate reviews (in my opinion) so you'll listen to this new band that they said was like the new Rolling Stones or something and they really just sound like crap. Anyway, I thought I would let you all in on what I'm listening to these days and why I like them.

1. Bowerbirds: This band/guy is AWESOME. Seriously. He sounds like a mix of Bon Iver+Iron and Wine+Beirut+something else I can't put my finger on right now. LP told me about them and I have never been so happy for someone to tell me about a band as this one. It's a guy who sings lead, but there's also a girl who sings harmonies and it sounds so pretty! The lyrics are great and the music itself is really good. Plus, they have an accordian on a few of the songs and let me tell you, if you love accordians, you'll love this. This band made me realize my love for the accordian. I didn't ever really think about them until I heard it on this album and then I started thinking about a few other bands who use the accordian and I suddenly realized that I LOVE that instrument.

2. Dr. Dog: These dudes are great. Sounds like The Beatles+Beach Boys harmonies+southern rock. I know, sounds like it could be horrible but it's not. It's the opposite. It's the kind of album that makes you feel like getting in your car on a beautiful day, rolling down the windows and blasting these guys as you drive through a field. Or something like that.

3. Frightened Rabbit: Irish guys sound just as awesome when they sing and this band proves it. They have some really fun songs that make you want to dance around your bedroom.

4. Sunset Rubdown: If you like a dude with a weird voice and kind of odd music then you will like this band. Related to him is.....

5. Handsome Furs: This is a dude and his girlfriend. He sings and she plays with synthesizers and it all makes for some good music. The guy from this band and the guy from Sunset Rubdown are another band that I LOVE called Wolf Parade. Also a fun band with drums and pretty forceful beats that makes me want to jump up and down.

6. The War on Drugs: I can't say that I am a huge fan of this album as a whole, but there is a great song that may be my favorite song of the moment on this album called "Arms Like Boulders" and you should all listen to it. It is super.

7. We Were Promised Jetpacks: LP also told me about these Scottish boys. I haven't listened to this band as much, but from what I've heard, I like them a lot.

So, that's what I got going for now. Check out some new music, ya'll!!!

Recent activities

Whew! I've been so busy these past few weeks. In case you hadn't heard, I got a job in DC. Yay, except that it's only part time. Boo. BUT, I've got another lady who wants to find clients for me so cross your fingers that she gets some and gives them to me!! Now, back to what else I've been doing.

Let's see, when I last posted I had just been to Pride. So fun! That next week was super relaxing. I spent it getting things in order for my job, looking up apartments, looking into changing my license, etc. On Thursday, LP came home early from work! I love when he does that. It's always a surprise and he'll just text and say "I'm ready to hang out with, I'm leaving work." Since I'm never doing anything, it's always a wonderful surprise and it always means we'll do something. That Thursday we went to Dolores Park. It's a cute little park that's super close to the house and there are always interesting people. kids, dogs, gays, punks, and bikers there. We are kind of into people watching/listening, so it's a great park to do that in! We grabbed a few beers and headed to the park to lay in the grass and let the sun warm us. I tried to take LP's picture:

It went about like that. He hates when I take his picture (but I secretly do it anyway!). So the next day was Friday and we decided to do something fun to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend. What did we decide on? The ZOO!!!!

This Decemeber, the San Francisco Zoo welcomed it's first baby gorilla born there in 10 years! Happy Birthday Baby Gorilla! I was really excited to see it, but LP said it might be bigger than I thought. I was little sad, until we went to the gorilla area!

That little black thing in the middle is the baby! He was so cute! And we got really lucky because his mama had him riding on her back for a while and then put him down so he could explore his home. This meant that we got to see him pick up grass and roll on the ground and see the other gorillas come over and interact with him. It was seriously adorable.

We left the zoo and went on a serach for a margarita. There is a HUGE mexican food industry here and we even live right next to The Mission, which is all hispanic people, but we had yet to find a good marg. Well, we accomplished our mission. In The Mission. Ok, actually it was on Valencia, but this mexican restaurant had some GOOD margs!
The next day (Saturday) we decided to head out the Filmore Jazz Festival. It's pretty famous and was supposed to be fun (and it was free!) so that's what we planned. As soon as we got there, we grabbed a beer and walked a bit. That is where I stumbled onto the coolest, sporadic, electric slide dance off set to Michael Jackson music. That's right. Bunch of people, on a sidewalk, doing the electric slide, listening to Michael Jackson.

This was also next to the booth that was selling a variety of MJ t-shirts, posters and memorabilia. Just in case you wanted it. So, we walked around the festival all day and that night went to LP's roof deck and watched fireworks. It was great and relaxing, which is what we'd been wanting to do.
I've been walking past this place almost every day that's next to the gym I go to and it has the most intriguing sign:
This Tuesday, LP and I decided to check it out. I love oysters and pints and we'd been wanting fish so we tried it. Yum. And cheap. We had a dozen oysters, a big old artichoke with shrimp and crab and 2 beers. It was good food, LP didn't have to cook it and I didn't have to clean up (that's our arrangement- he cooks, I clean) so it was a win-win for everyone!
